Expanding Kwikset's smart home app to support a new garage door opener

Delivered a full feature set across mobile, Android Auto, and CarPlay; exceeding stakeholder expectations ahead of a limited release.

Context

Kwikset makes smart locks for the home. When they launched a new garage door opener, they needed their existing app to support it in seamlessly for new and existing users. I joined as UI designer to help in this processwhere I also assisted with light UX and graphic design responsibilities.

The problem

The app had no garage functionality. Adding it meant designing new feature sets without disrupting an existing, established UI on a tight timeline.

Android Auto / CarPlay interface

What I did

Designed open/close controls, preset open settings, and light controls including brightness
Built onboarding and vacation mode flows from scratch
Created the interface for Android Auto and CarPlay; a first for the product
Worked within existing brand and UI guidelines to ensure a seamless experience
Managed stakeholder reviews and iterated based on feedback throughout

outcome

Kept the design simple, chosing to limit distractions to the user and prioritizing safety while driving.

Stakeholders noted the work exceeded their expectations, particularly the Android Auto and CarPlay integration.

The feature set is currently in limited release with a wider rollout planned. No public metrics yet, but internal reception was strong.
